Swinging from the Chandeliers

The earliest candle chandeliers were use by the wealthy in medieval times. They were generally wooden crosses, with spikes on which candles were secured. They were hoisted to a suitable height, hooked on a rope or chain.
From the 15th century, more complex forms of chandeliers, based on ring or crown designs, became popular decorative features in palaces and homes of nobility, clergy and merchants. It's high cost made the chandelier a symbol of luxury or status. But by the early 18th century, ornate, cast forms with long, curved arms and many candles were in the homes of many in the growing merchant class. Later, developments in glass making became the standard for the drop crystal you see in early modern times. Now, there are a whole glossary of terms used for a Chandelier, and virtually anyone can afford a nicely made or custom Chandelier. One of my favorites with a twist, is Boots N Gus on Etsy. They carry a unique upcycled and mason jar design, bringing customers a nice twist to the old classical styles.
